Gritter Fleet Naming Competition

PUBLIC COMPETITION LAUNCHED TO NAME AMEY’S NORTH EAST SCOTLAND GRITTER FLEET

Amey is launching their 2024/25 gritter naming competition calling on the public to submit more inventive winter themed names for their north east Scotland fleet.

Amey’s north east winter service, which is delivered on behalf of Transport Scotland, covers 593km of trunk road, from Dunfermline up to Inverness, across nine different Scottish regions and major cities such as Perth, Dundee and Aberdeen.

The public appeal is now live and family friendly online entries will be accepted from 9am on Thursday 21st November until 5pm on Friday 20th December.

Amey’s gritter fleet

Amey’s 40 north east Scotland gritters, decked out in their distinctive bright orange livery, are again a regular sight on the trunk road network after the recent cold snap.

The gritters, which cover frontline treatments and patrols, include 18-tonne, 26-tonne and 32-tonne vehicles, making them some of the largest in the UK.

Winning names from last year that are out on the trunk roads as part of the 2024/25 winter service include: Ploos Yer Doos, Ready Salted, The Gritmas Chronicles, Hansel and Grit-all, Salta Claus and Oor Gritty.

How to vote

To enter the Name A Gritter competition members of the public can submit their family-friendly suggestions to Amey via the online form here.

The form requires:

  • Your name and the name of a parent or guardian if you are under 18.
  • Your contact phone number and/or email address.
  • Your suggested gritter name, which should be no more than four words or 25 characters.

There is no entry fee and multiple entries are accepted. A parent, guardian or teacher can enter on behalf of a child under 18. The winning name will be displayed on a gritter based at an Amey depot closest to the location of the winning entrant, so the winner should be able to spot their gritter out and about on roads closest to them.

Gritter name reveals will take place on the @NETrunkRoads Facebook and X channels and will appear live on the Traffic Scotland Gritter Tracker.
